Are you ready to take the next step in your career? Here’s how to kick start your search for a new job in accounting, finance or business support.

Looking for a new job can be daunting even for the most experienced professionals. However, now that Christmas is over hopefully you’re feeling refreshed, re-energized and ready to see what opportunities are out there.

Here are five simple ways to get your job hunt off to the right start in 2020.

1. Write down your new career goals

This doesn’t have to be a lengthy or complicated process. All you need is a few minutes to ask yourself some basic questions to you help establish your focus and, most importantly, get excited about the future.

What do you like about your current job? What do you wish you could more (or less) of? What size business or culture would suit you? Jot down a list of bullet points to organise your thoughts. When you’re ready you can start to build on each point to create a clearer picture of what kind of role or environment you’re looking for. Not only will this help you find the right job, having a clear vision and the ability to communicate what you want will boost your confidence and help you ace your interviews.

2. Let people in your network know you’re looking for a new job

The exact figure is hazy, but some experts report that up to 85% of jobs go unadvertised. Some level of tact and confidentially may be required but letting people in your professional networks know that you’re open to new job opportunities will boost your chances of hearing about relevant opportunities first.

3. Tell recruitment agencies what kind of jobs you’re looking for

When we’ve successfully placed a candidate they’ll often get back in touch when they’re ready for their next career move.  However, sometimes candidates forget to let us know when they’re open to new job opportunities again.

Even if it’s only your salary expectations that have changed, touch base with your recruiter so they can keep an ear to the ground for roles that may interest you.

4. Look at the latest accounting, finance, and business news

Depending on the kind of roles you’re interested in it may be helpful to read up on industry news before you start. For example, if you’d like to try your hand at working in the not for profit sector, be sure to read up on the current financial laws and regulations for this sector.

5. Check our latest salary guides
